我が子を連れて、初めてセントラルバレー日本語補習校の新年会に参加したのは2年前でした。漸くひらがなの読み書きができるようになったころだったので、新年会でひらがなのかるた遊びで、自分でカードを見つけ、先生にほめてもらえた時の息子の顔を今も覚えています。新年会では楽しい遊びが豊富で、なによりお琴を弾いていたり、日本語で歌を歌っていたり、生き生きとした生徒たちの顔が印象的でした。とても楽しいイベントだった！という思い出でした。
まさかその2年後に私が新年会のリーダーを任されるとは・・・!! わからないことだらけからスタートした、というのが本音です。先輩のお母さんたちと幾度とミーティングをし、様々なことを決め、実行し、記録してきました。空が真っ暗になるまで会議に付き合ってくださった先生方、日中でも夜でも質問や提案にすぐに返答してくださった皆さんがいたからこそ、モチベーションをずっと高く持ち続けることができた理由だと思います。
2年前に自分たちが楽しんだように、今回来てくださるみんなが楽しめるような新年会になれば良いなと思いながら準備をしてきました。補習校最大のイベントということもあり、準備は大変でした。どんなことでも大きなイベントをする際、苦労はつきものですが、楽しいこともたくさんあります。せっかく「ファンドレージングチェアー」という大きなタイトルを頂いたので、いろんな企業にダメもとでお願いしてみようと思いました。とは言えども、リクエストを入れることは勇気が必要です。しかし、ほとんどの企業、レストランが快く承諾してくれました。ある企業にはどんなものが欲しいですか、などと質問をいただき、私たちがリクエストしたアイテムを揃えてくださいました。地元の企業・レストランへは仕事の昼休みの時間や、仕事終わりに顔を出して挨拶し、ドネーションアイテムをいただいてきました。フレズノ以外の企業には家族とデイトリップとして楽しみながら取りに行きました。直接挨拶をして取りに行ったときには、補習校がどんな学校で、どんなことをしてるのかから始まって楽しいおしゃべりにつながったりもしました。
小さな学校だからこそ、いろんな人にもっと知ってもらい、知ってもらうことで日本文化をより広めていけたらとも思っています。言葉はもちろんですが、使わずほっておけば、文化や習慣なども消えてしまい、継承することはできません。自分一人では子供たちにすべてを教えることは不可能ですが、こういった学校環境があるおかげで、子供たちは先生たち、他の保護者の皆さん、コミュニティーを通して様々なことを吸収することができています。今回の新年会も「楽しい」だけのイベントではなく、自分たちで作り上げるイベントのむずかしさ、チャンスを与えてもらったことに感謝する気持ちを学んでもらえたと思います。
準備期間は長い新年会でしたが、得たものはとても大きかったと思います。補習校に快くご協力頂いた皆さまに再度、心から感謝申し上げます。

It was 2 years ago when I took my son to the New Year Festival at CVJS for the first time. It was around the time when my son was finally able to read and write hiragana. He played a hiragana karuta game at the festival and he was given a compliment by some teachers as he found the right cards. I still remember his smile on his face as he heard it. The event offered a variety of fun games and crafts, but most of all, the students did an amazing job at singing in Japanese and even played the Koto – Japanese harp. My memory of the event was full of fun and excitement.
I never expected that two years later I would become a leader of this big event! I started out with so many things that I did not know. With other parents, we carried multiple meetings. I was able to keep my motivation so high because of the teachers and other parents who helped me with these meetings and prompt feedback to my questions and suggestions regardless of day or night.
We have prepared for this big event with the hope that everyone who would come would enjoy it as much as I enjoyed 2 years ago. The New Years Festival is the biggest event of the school and needs a lot of time and effort. Any event demands such; however, there are fun parts,too.
Since I was given such a big title of the “Fundraising Chair”, I thought I would try asking various companies even if it was a long shot. Yet, of course asking for donations takes courage. To my surprise, most of the companies and restaurants I asked came back with supporting responses. Some companies kindly asked us what we would like for the event and provided us with the items we requested. I dropped by local businesses and restaurants during my lunch break or after work to say hello and receive donation items. For a company outside Fresno, my family went for a daytrip and picked up the items. It was a long day on the road but it turned out to be a fun day! When I had the opportunity to greet them, we started off by talking about our school and this event, which led to a fun conversation.
My hope is to spread awareness of who we are outside of school. It is said ‘use it or lose it’ when it comes to language. The same could be said about culture and custom. It becomes extremely difficult to carry them on to the next generation if we do not appreciate them. Thanks to this wonderful school environment here, children are able to learn much from teachers, parents and their community. The New Years Festival ended successfully and the students had fun but also learned the difficulty of creating an event by themselves as well as how to be grateful for all the support they received.
It was such a long process to prepare for this New Year’s Festival, but we learned a lot from it. Once again, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who helped us make this event possible.
